A Green Beret’s Mission to Revolutionize Agriculture

After over a decade of service in the U.S. Army Special Forces, Patrick Samuels traded combat boots for farm boots—but his mission didn’t end with military retirement. Instead, it evolved into something deeply personal: transforming America’s food industry from the ground up.

This episode of the Security Halt! Podcast highlights Patrick’s journey from elite military operator to founder of Sunny Side Egg Co., a regenerative agriculture initiative based in Kentucky. His mission? To provide truly pasture-raised eggs through decentralized, local farming—and to expose the misleading practices that dominate the egg and food industries.

Why "Pasture-Raised" Doesn’t Always Mean What You Think

Patrick offers a rare inside look at the world of industrial egg production. As a former employee of a major pasture-raised egg company, he exposes the misleading marketing tactics and deceptive industry standards that hide behind glossy labels and greenwashed claims.

Most pasture-raised eggs, he explains, come from barns housing tens of thousands of birds, with minimal outdoor access. Less than 15% of hens labeled “pasture-raised” ever step outside. Even the vibrant orange yolks consumers associate with healthier eggs are often artificially enhanced using feed additives—not the result of truly natural diets.

Through his company, Patrick brings transparency and integrity back to the table—guaranteeing that every egg comes from small, local farms within a 100-mile radius of its sale point.

A Sustainable Model Rooted in Decentralization and Fair Wages

Inspired by military principles of decentralization, resilience, and community support, Patrick created a scalable model that empowers small farmers without burying them in debt. Instead of pushing massive operations, Sunny Side Egg Co. supports flocks ranging from 300 to 3,000 hens—making agriculture accessible, profitable, and sustainable.

One farmer started with just $8,000 and now earns a stable side income while contributing to a more ethical food system. This model supports fair wages, strengthens local economies, and reintroduces consumers to food that’s fresh, local, and responsibly raised.

Veterans, Healing, and the Return to the Land

Patrick and Deny explore how agriculture offers a path to healing for veterans, blending structure, service, and a deep connection to the land. Farming provides not only economic opportunity but spiritual grounding and mental clarity—something many service members seek after transitioning out of the military.

This episode underscores how regenerative agriculture is more than just a buzzword—it’s a blueprint for rebuilding broken systems. For veterans, parents, entrepreneurs, and conscious consumers, this conversation is a rallying cry to reclaim food, community, and purpose.
